What is AARTO?
The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences. The demerit points system has been introduced to penalize drivers and operators who are habitual offenders.
How Does it work?
- In addition to the monetary value of traffic fines, demerit points will be recorded against offending drivers & Companies.
- The allocation of these points can lead to the cancellation or suspension of driving licenses, PrDPs and operator cards.
- As an owner of a vehicle or fleet of vehicles you could have all your vehicles suspended and taken off of the roads.
- Non compliance will lead to confiscation of movable property and ultimately to being declared unfit to operate a motor vehicle.
- Should you make use of contractors you need to make sure that they also comply to AARTO standards as their non-compliance will have an effect on your business continuity.
- Note that this legislation applies to every person with a valid vehicle license in South Africa.
