AARTO on the Radio
The Minister of Transport stated in a radio interview with SAFM on 14/09/2010 that the demerit points system will be implemented in October 2010. This then means that AARTO national rollout must happen before this or at the same time. Whilst we have as yet not seen a gazette proclaiming this fact we must now take the Minister seriously. There is now a very strong possibility that in a few weeks time AARTO will be fully functional countrywide. Added to this The Minister also said they will be pulling over a million vehicles off the road monthly, countrywide, to do spot checks against drivers licences, roadworthy checks outstanding traffic violations etc.
As there are roughly 10 million vehicles in SA this means each person now stands a 1 in 10 chance of being pulled over. This also means that in theory every vehicle in South Africa will be stopped and checked within 10 months. For those who willingly disobey the law their nightmare begins here as demerit points will now kick in on any new violations issued upon demerit proclamation in the gazette.
